Today is the day of the year when, in both the northern and the southern hemispheres, the durations of the daytime and of the night are equal.
In the northern hemisphere, the daytime lengthens and the night shortens, the sun rising earlier and setting later. In the southern hemisphere, it’s the opposite.
We name it the Day of the Rising of the Sun, and it’s usually called the spring equinox.
This day symbolises the End of gestation and the Beginning of a new vital cycle by Birth, the Awakening of Life which exits the matrix where it was hidden, towards the external world where it becomes apparent and exposed, it symbolises awakening, vitality and beauty.
Some cultures around the world set the first day of the year as the spring equinox, others as the winter solstice, based on slightly different symbolisms depending on their observational frame of reference, however linked to each other.
Cultures that take earth and life as a referential, with the appearance of living beings that emerge from the maternal matrix in which they were hidden, such as plants that bloom and animals that give birth, after the end of the winter cold and the return of the spring warmth, take the spring equinox as the first day of the solar year.
This is notably the case with the Hebrew (luni-solar) ancient calendar (before the exile in Babylon), where the Beginning of the Year (“Rosh Ha-Shanah” in Hebrew) established in the Book of Exodus (12:2) was the first of Nissan, the date of which varies between the 12th March and the 11th April (the spring equinox being the 20th March); It was from the exile in Babylon that Rosh Ha-Shanah became the first of Tishri, the date of which varies between the 5th September and the 5th October.
It is celebrated in many cultures around the world as the beginning of the phase of the year that is the season of sowing and seedling in the aim of future harvest to come later in the year, spring. Spring symbolises the growth of seeds, the burgeoning of leaves and flowers, the birth of animal cubs, and the hope of a prosperous year. Spring will last 93 days this year.
The astronomical event corresponds to an excursion of the sun’s apparent position that is equal in both the northern and the southern hemispheres, being at the exact zenith of the equator, making it rising at the exact East and setting at the exact West. Today, it occurred precisely at 9 h 2 min 25 s UTC, corresponding to 10 h 2 min 25 s in Central European Time (CET = UTC+1 time zone which includes notably Belgium and France).
