Today is the day of the year when, in both the northern and the southern hemispheres, the durations of the daytime and of the night are equal.
In the northern hemisphere, the daytime shortens and the night lengthens, the sun rising later and setting earlier. In the southern hemisphere, it’s the opposite.
We name it the Day of the Setting of the Sun, and it’s usually called the autumn equinox.
This day symbolises the Maturity of Life which reaches its full development in complexity and in knowledge and in might, it symbolises mastery, wisdom and guidance.
It is celebrated in many cultures around the world as the beginning of the phase of the year that is the season of harvest and constitution of food provisions, autumn. Autumn symbolises the harvest of the fruits of the work accomplished and their contemplation in peace. Autumn will last 90 days this year.
The astronomical event corresponds to an excursion of the sun’s apparent position that is equal in both the northern and the southern hemispheres, being at the exact zenith of the equator, making it rising at the exact East and setting at the exact West. Today, it occurs precisely at 18 h 19 min 16 s UTC, corresponding to 20 h 19 min 16 s in Central European Summer Time (CEST = UTC+2 time zone which includes notably Belgium and France).
