May Life and Peace be upon all beings.
Today is the day of the year when the duration of the daytime equals that of the night, and from which it begins to exceed it, in the northern hemisphere.
The sun Rises from its winter path, low, toward its summer path, high in the sky. Its light warms and illuminates the life that was in gestation during winter, allowing it to emerge from its matrix, to be born, to awaken and to Rise toward the World. Thus, we call it the Day of the Rising of the Sun, and it is commonly known as the spring equinox.
From today onward, the day is longer than the night. In the southern hemisphere, it is the opposite.
Thus, the gentle Glow intensifies into a vivid Light, symbolising the passage from sleep to Awakening, the uprighting from a lying position to a standing position.
This day symbolises the End of gestation and the Beginning of a new vital cycle through Birth, the Awakening of Life emerging from the matrix in which it was hidden, toward the outer world where it becomes visible and exposed, it symbolises awakening, vitality, and beauty.
After gestation within the lower, comes the Rising toward the outer and the higher.
Symbolically, after the death of the Illusory Me, the Awakened Me finds itself in a state of Emptiness devoid of all form, completely stripped naked and reduced to its minimal essence.
This Emptiness is empty only of forms and appearances, yet it is Full of the Presence of Life.
Within this Fullness which protects it like a matrix, the Awakened Me reconnects and relinks with Life, it regenerates and rediscovers its authentic and primordial nature.
When it is fully nourished and regenerated by Life and reaches its state of Fullness, the Awakened Me is ready to emerge from its matrix; it crosses the Threshold separating the lower inner from the higher outer, it Rises and frees itself into the external world where it can begin to act.
Just as the sun that, after dawn when it is still invisible and only its gentle glow lights the dimness, crosses the threshold of the horizon, rises and appears in its fullness, and its vivid Light warms and illuminates the entire earth and sky, where all can begin to become active.
And just as living beings that, from the spring equinox onward, emerge from the maternal matrix in which they were hidden, and appear. With the growth of shoots, the budding of leaves, the flowering of plants, and animals giving birth and the arrival of their young.
This is why many cultures of the world, which take the earth and life as a referential, establish this day as the first day of the solar year. Others celebrate this day for its symbolism.
It is celebrated as the beginning of the phase of the year that is the season of sowing, in view of the future harvests to come, spring, with the hope of a prosperous year.
Among the Hebrews, it is the Beginning of the Year (Rosh Ha-Shanah), as established in the Book of Exodus (12:2), in the ancient calendar preceding the Babylonian exile, the first of Nisan, whose date varies between March 12 and April 11 (the spring equinox being on March 20). It is from the Babylonian exile onward that Rosh Ha-Shanah became the first of Tishri, whose date varies between September 5 and October 5.
Pessah (Passover), which means “passage,” is set at the first full moon of Nisan, that is the night from the 14th to the 15th of Nisan. It symbolises the passage from a state of limitation to a state of liberation, expressed in society by the barley harvest that opens the annual agricultural cycle, and in history by the Exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, and thus their birth as a people.
The Christian Passover, Easter, carries the same symbolism of passage from limitation to liberation, expressed in history through the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion.
It is Holi among the Indians, Chunfen among the Chinese, Nowruz among Iranian Zoroastrians, Ostara among the Germanic peoples.
The astronomical event corresponds to an excursion of the sun’s apparent position that is equal in both the northern and the southern hemispheres, being at the exact zenith of the equator, making it rising at the exact East and setting at the exact West. Today, it occurred precisely at 14:45:57 UTC, corresponding to 15:45:57 in Central European Time (time zone UTC+1, which includes notably Belgium and France).
Spring will last 93 days this year.
